• IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SIGNAL PROCESSING publication

Dr Yiming Lei and Dr. Máirtín O’Droma have publish a major paper in the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 1st October, 2015. The paper is entitled “A Novel Decomposition Analysis of Nonlinear Distortion in OFDM Transmitter Systems.” It puts forward some original ideas for the analysis and modelling of nonlinear power amplifier distortion of the very popular, very modern and very relevant Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed signal wireless interface (OFDM). This interface is used in WiFi, 4th and 5th generation cellular networks, in digital audio broadcasting, in digital video broadcasting among others. This journal ranks 23 out of 248 in the Electronic Engineering discipline by Thomson Reuters in their Web of Science Journal Citation Rankings (JCR).   • BIG DATA PROJECT

The University of Limerick, through its Telecommunications Research Centre, has just signed, at the end of August, a two year sponsored research agreement on “Data Management Platform for Big Data” with an IT company in Beijing China. The company is called Beijing Wan Zhang Ying Ke Technology Co. Ltd. The project, worth 90k€, will begin in October 2015 and will continue to December 2017.


  • HIGHEST GLOBAL TELECOMS STANDARDISATION BODY CITES RESEARCH BY UL’S TRC RESEARCHERS

The United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU), recently published ( November 2014) a report of major significance into “Cognitive Radio Systems in Land Mobile Service.” The reports cites original blue-skies research published by researchers in the Telecommunications Research Centre on ‘Ubiquitous Consumer Wireless World’ and on ‘Wireless Billboard Channels’ both describing completely new ideas for next generation wireless networking. Of the 64 research papers referenced in the ITU report (code “M.2330-0 11/2014; URL: http://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-r/opb/rep/R-REP-M.2330-2014-PDF-E.pdf), five are co-authored by members of UL’s TRC. These TRC publications have been published in the highest ranked research journals including one in the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine which is the top research journal in the world for telecommunications, electronic and electrical engineering, and Computer science. This is according to the world reputed journal citation ranking agency Thomson Reuters.

Dr Yiming Lei, Dr. Máirtín O’Droma and Dr. Jin Ye have publish a major paper in the IEEE Transactions on Communications on “A practical analysis of performance optimization in OSTBC based nonlinear MIMO-OFDM systems”, in its March 2014 volume. ] This high impact journal ranks 14 out of 78 in the Telecommunications Engineering discipline by Thomson Reuters in their Web of Science Journal Citation Rankings (JCR).   • IEEE MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS COMPONENTS LETTERS publication

Dr Yiming Lei and Dr. Máirtín O’Droma have publish a major paper in the IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters (MWCL) volume published in January 2013. It proposes an new original RF nonlinear power amplifier behavioural model which they demonstrate to be ‘best in class’. They proved that it outperforms all other models published to date. It’ll be used in the engineering design of the high power amplifiers used so very widely today, such as in all mobile phones and wireless access base-stations. These amplifiers are the major user, by far, of battery energy, and they do so inefficiently because of their nonlinearities. Accurate modelling of these nonlinearities is a foundational step in seeking to improve their efficiency and reduce their nonlinear distortion effects on the wireless signal. This high impact journal ranking in the top 10% of electronic and telecommunications engineering research journals as ranked by Thomson Reuters in their WoS JCRs.   • China Scholarship Council

The Telecommunications Research Centre (TRC) welcomes prospective Chinese postgrad candidates willing to undertake telecom-related PhD research in Ireland as part of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) programme of the Chinese government agency, which provides scholarships to students for doctoral studies abroad. The University of Limerick offers five doctoral scholarships and three visiting doctoral scholarships to students in receipt of a CSC Postgraduate Scholarship.
